Connect Cline to Open-Weight Models on Impossible Cloud Inference
This article explains how to configure the Cline coding agent in VS Code to use open-weight models served through Impossible Cloud.
Interactive demo
The demo below walks through the full setup and a short coding task. The steps that follow describe the same configuration in text form.
How to connect Cline to Impossible Cloud and build a pricing calculator from a pricing file using open models hosted in Europe. Cline is a coding agent. Impossible Cloud is used as the model provider. No Cline subscription is needed; an Impossible Cloud API key is used instead.
Setup: Continue to connect Impossible Cloud as the provider. Open the API provider list and choose OpenAI Compatible, since Impossible Cloud works like any OpenAI-style provider. Enter Impossible Cloud's OpenAI-compatible endpoint URL from the documentation. Paste the Impossible Cloud Inference API key. Choose the preferred model from the Impossible Cloud model catalogue. Open the model configuration tab and enter the input and output prices per 1M tokens from the catalogue so Cline shows the cost of each task. Pick the reasoning effort that fits the task; only the tokens used are charged. Click Continue to finish setup.
Building the calculator: The input is a file named pricing.md. Review it, then switch Cline to Plan mode. Describe the calculator you want. Cline reads the file and plans, with every answer served through Impossible Cloud. Cline produces a full plan covering discount tiers, a gateway rule, add-ons and a total. Review the plan, then switch to Act mode. Cline proposes a test of the quote logic and waits for user approval. Cline checks its own work: discount tiers, gateway rounding and the 500+ notice, with 10 tests passing.
Result and iteration: Open index.html in VS Code's built-in browser. Create a test quote by choosing ALIBI-T2 and confirm the quote is correct. Iterate by requesting brand colors and a "Copy quote" button. Cline edits the existing file instead of starting over and re-tests the quote logic to confirm nothing broke. Review the changes in the browser. A pricing sheet becomes a working tool in two prompts, with every token processed in Europe.
Impossible Cloud provides one OpenAI-compatible endpoint for coding agents, with open models in Europe, no prompts stored, no training on user code, and pay-per-token pricing.
Prerequisites
- Visual Studio Code installed
- An Impossible Cloud inference account and API key
- The model ID you want to use, from the Impossible Cloud model catalogue
Step 1: Get your endpoint URL, API key and model ID
You can find your endpoint URL in the Impossible Cloud console, and create an API key there. The model IDs are listed in the Impossible Cloud model catalogue.
You need three values for the configuration in Cline:
- Base URL: the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, ending in
/v1,
for examplehttps://eu-west-3.inference.impossibleapi.net/v1 - API key: your Impossible Cloud inference API key
- Model ID: the exact ID from the model catalogue, for example
qwen3.8-27b
Step 2: Install Cline in VS Code
- In VS Code, open the Extensions view.
- Search for Cline and install the extension.
- Open Cline from its icon in the activity bar.
Step 3: Choose "Bring my own API key"
- On the How will you use Cline? screen, select Bring my own API key.
- Click Continue.
No Cline subscription is required for this setup. Cline sends requests directly to your Impossible Cloud endpoint.
Step 4: Configure the OpenAI Compatible provider
On the Configure your provider screen, enter the following:
- API Provider: select OpenAI Compatible.
- Base URL: enter your Impossible Cloud endpoint URL, including
/v1. Cline adds the rest of the path. - OpenAI Compatible API Key: paste your Impossible Cloud API key. Enter the key only, without a
Bearerprefix. The key is stored locally in VS Code. - Model ID: select the model from the dropdown. Cline loads the list directly from your endpoint.
Step 5: Set the model configuration
- Expand Model Configuration.
- Supports Images: enable this only if the model accepts image input.
- Context Window Size: enter the context window of the model from the Impossible Cloud model catalogue.
- Input Price / 1M tokens and Output Price / 1M tokens: enter the token prices from the model catalogue. Cline uses these values to show the cost of each task.
- Reasoning Effort: choose how much the model reasons before answering. Higher effort gives more thorough answers but uses more tokens.
- Click Continue.
All settings can be changed later in the Cline settings.
Step 6: Start coding with Plan and Act mode
- Check that the model shown below the chat input is your Impossible Cloud model.
- Switch to Plan mode and describe your task. Cline reads the relevant files and proposes a plan without changing anything.
- Review the plan, then switch to Act mode. Cline writes the code and asks for your approval before running commands or changing files, depending on your auto-approve settings.
The task header shows the tokens used and the cost of the current task, based on the prices you entered in Step 5.
