How to Integrate QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync with Impossible Cloud Storage

Easily connect QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync 3 (HBS) to Impossible Cloud Storage for secure, efficient backup and disaster recovery across local, remote, and cloud environments.

QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) is a backup, restoration, and synchronization application for QNAP NAS devices. It supports S3-compatible cloud storage as a backup destination, making it straightforward to configure Impossible Cloud Storage as a target.

To access the QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync documentation, please visit https://docs.qnap.com/application/hybrid-backup-sync/3v21.x/en-us/about-hybrid-backup-sync-7B58C17A.html

There is currently a known issue in some versions of the QNAP HBS3 that might cause a 'SignatureDoesNotMatch' (or authentication) error. The issue is currently under research with high priority. As soon as it has been resolved, this information will have been removed.

Prerequisites

  • A bucket in Impossible Cloud Storage. If you have not created one yet, log in to the Impossible Cloud Storage Console and create a bucket in your preferred region before continuing.
  • An IAM user with programmatic access and an access key/secret key pair. Follow the secure programmatic access guide if you have not done this yet.

Step 1: Run HBS 3 Hybrid Backup Sync on your NAS

Log in to your QNAP device as an administrator. Open App Center, select Backup/Sync in the left navigation, and open HBS 3 Hybrid Backup Sync. If HBS 3 is not yet installed, click Install.

Step 2: Add Impossible Cloud as a storage space

In HBS 3, go to Storage Spaces and click New Storage Space. Select Amazon S3 & S3 Compatible as the storage type.

Fill in the fields as follows:

  • Name: a descriptive label for this storage space, for example Impossible Cloud
  • Service provider: select S3 Compatible
  • Server Address:  the S3 endpoint for your bucket's region with port 443 appended, for example eu-central-2.storage.impossibleapi.net:443. Do not include https://. Find the correct hostname in the Impossible Cloud endpoint reference
  • Signature version: Select v4
  • Region: the region matching the endpoint you selected above, for example eu-central-2
  • Access Key: your Impossible Cloud IAM access key
  • Secret Key: your Impossible Cloud IAM secret key

On the same screen, make sure Use SSL connection is checked.

Click Create to save the storage space.

For reference, the full QNAP guide for this step is available at Creating a Storage Space on Amazon S3.

Step 3: Create a backup job

With the storage space configured, go to Backup in HBS 3 and click New Job. Select the Impossible Cloud storage space you just created as the destination, then select the bucket you created in the prerequisite step. Choose your source folders and configure your schedule and retention settings.

See the QNAP guide Creating a Backup Job for the full walkthrough of job options.
