How to Set Up the Impossible Cloud Storage as a Device on NovaBACKUP

This step-by-step guide shows how to configure Impossible Cloud Storage as a backup destination in NovaBACKUP through the management server.

NovaBACKUP is a comprehensive backup and recovery software solution designed for PCs, servers, endpoints, and virtual machines. It offers both local and cloud backup options, allowing for a flexible and reliable data protection strategy.

This guide shows how you can set up Impossible Cloud Storage as a backup destination by adding a new device using the S3 compatible connector in NovaBACKUP.

Prerequisites:

Before you begin, please ensure you have the following:

  1. You have access to the Impossible Cloud Storage Console (ICSC).
  2. You have installed and set up the NovaBACKUP management server.

Step 1: Create a new bucket in Impossible Cloud

Login to your ICSC account and proceed to create a bucket from the buckets menu. Here is a link to the Impossible Cloud Storage documentation, which includes detailed instructions and screenshots for creating a bucket.

If you plan to use NovaBACKUP's retention feature, make sure to enable versioning and object lock for the bucket. You do not need to set a retention period at the bucket level - NovaBACKUP will manage that automatically.

Step 2: Generate access keys and secret keys

Login to your ICSC account and proceed to Add key from the keys menu to create a new access and secret key. Here is a link to the Impossible Cloud Storage documentation that explains about access keys in more detail.

Step 3: Create a new device in an agent

  1. From the NovaBACKUP management console, navigate to the Agents tab.

  2. Select the agent where you want to add the new device.

  3. Click on the Devices tab for that agent.

  4. Click Add Device to create a new device.

Step 4: Set up the device for Impossible Cloud Storage

  1. In the "Create Device" window, select Device Type as Amazon S3 Compatible and select Amazon S3 Compatible Device Type as Amazon S3 Compatible Device.

  2. Enter a descriptive Name.

  3. For the URL, enter the storage endpoint of the region in which the bucket was previously created in Step 1.

You can find the right URL on your bucket in ICSC or you can choose the right S3 regional endpoints from our documentation.

  4. Enter your Access key and Secret key from your Impossible Cloud Storage Console you have created in Step 2.

  5. Enter the Bucket name you have created in step 1.

  6. Enter a valid User name and Backup directory. This will create a folder inside the S3 bucket, enabling you to store multiple machines in the same bucket.
  7. Keep the Domain and Machine name empty. It is going to be automatically filled in once the device is added.
  8. (Optional) Set up Encryption keys to add a client-side encryption for your data. This adds an extra layer of security to your backup.
  9. Click Add Device.

Once the device has been added to the machine, you are now ready to set up a backup job and begin backing up your data to Impossible Cloud. Follow the steps on this Youtube tutorial for further details.
