How to recover deleted backups in Acronis that are protected by object lock in the Impossible Cloud Storage

This article explains how to recover backups in Acronis that were deleted through the Acronis user interface but are still protected by object lock (immutability) in the Impossible Cloud Storage.

Immutability refers to the ability to store data in a way that it cannot be altered or deleted for a defined duration. In the context of backups, this is especially important for protecting critical data from tampering or removal by unauthorized users or ransomware.

In Acronis, immutability is enabled by configuring the backup location with an immutability period. This is only possible if versioning and object lock is enabled for the Impossible Cloud bucket that is used as a backup location.

For detailed guidance on configuring object lock in an Impossible Cloud bucket, visit our storage documentation.

How to recover deleted backups in Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud

If backups were deleted via the Acronis interface - either by accident or due to unauthorized activity - but the destination bucket is protected by object lock, the backups can still be recovered using the Acronis user interface.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the backup location where the data was stored.
  2. Click the "Show deleted" button to reveal backups that were deleted but are still protected.
  3. If no backups appear, click "Refresh" to reload the view.
  4. The deleted backups should now be visible and available for review or recovery.

This method only works if an immutability period was set when the backup location was created in Acronis.

What if the entire backup location was deleted in Acronis?

If the entire backup location has been deleted from Acronis, and the data was protected by object lock, recovery is still possible - but it cannot be done directly through the Acronis UI.

In such cases, we recommend contacting Acronis Support immediately by opening a support ticket. Be sure to include:

  • The name of the deleted backup location
  • Any known configuration details (e.g. immutability period, associated Impossible Cloud bucket, ...)

Acronis Support can help assess the situation and guide you through the appropriate recovery steps.
